The simple answer: have a lot of good, relevant content on your site so it gets indexed in the search engines, and also build links back to your site from other highly ranked sites. There are a ton of ways, but those are the two most important.

First, create a lot of useful, written content. This should be something that people need to find out, not ad copy. How to articles are good, or lists. (Top 10 lists with useful info are GREAT.)

Then, spread them around on a number of sites that accept submissions. Article sites (ezinearticles.com, Article Avenue), social news sites (Digg, Reddit, Netscape,) and bookmarking sites (del.icio.us, ma.gnolia, StumbleUpon).

The idea is to have links to your site in as many places as possible, so you are find-able by as many PEOPLE as possible. Then the quality of your content should hook them in. If they need what you are selling, hopefully that will get them to continue onto your site.
